Exceed Microneedling: Why We Chose Exceed

Microneedling has become one of the most talked about skin treatments, but when it comes to choosing a device, we believe the technology behind the treatment matters just as much as the treatment itself. At The Functional Skin Studio, we use Exceed Microneedling, a medical-grade microneedling device.

So, what makes Exceed different, and why did we choose it for our skin needling treatments?

First: what is microneedling?

Microneedling uses very fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin.

This controlled process is designed to stimulate the skin's natural repair response and can be used as part of treatment plans targeting concerns such as acne scarring, fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin texture. Unlike some cosmetic devices that simply work on the surface of the skin, professional microneedling devices penetrate the skin and therefore require appropriate training, hygiene and treatment protocols.

The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) notes that microneedling devices and procedures can carry risks including redness, infection and scarring, particularly when performed without appropriate professional supervision or hygiene controls.

Why we chose Exceed

There are plenty of microneedling devices available, so why Exceed?

For us, it comes down to the combination of technology, regulatory clearance, precision and the clinical information available around the device.

FDA-cleared technology

Exceed has received FDA 510(k) clearance in the United States for specific facial microneedling indications. The first clearance, K180778, relates to improving the appearance of facial wrinkles in adults aged 22 and over, for specified facial areas and Fitzpatrick skin types I–III. A second clearance, K182407, relates to improving the appearance of facial acne scars in adults aged 22 and over.

This doesn't mean that every use of Exceed is automatically "FDA approved". FDA clearance applies to the specific indications reviewed by the FDA.

We think that distinction is important, particularly when you see aesthetic clinics making broad claims about devices being "FDA approved".

Precision matters

Exceed is a powered microneedling device that uses a motorised handpiece and a multi-needle cartridge.

The FDA documentation for Exceed describes a six-needle configuration and a maximum needle penetration of 1.5 mm for the relevant facial indication. The device's needle protrusion and operating parameters can be adjusted by the practitioner according to the treatment being performed.

For us, this precision is important.

Microneedling isn't about simply going as deep as possible.

The appropriate treatment parameters depend on the individual, their skin, their treatment goals and the area being treated.

It's not about creating as much trauma as possible

There's a misconception that a more aggressive microneedling treatment must mean better results.

That's not how we approach skin.

Microneedling works by creating controlled micro-injuries, but more isn't necessarily better. The depth, speed, technique and treatment frequency all need to be considered alongside the individual person's skin.

Our practitioners assess your skin before treatment and tailor the approach rather than using the same settings for everyone.

What can Exceed Microneedling help with?

Microneedling may be incorporated into a treatment plan for concerns including:

The specific treatment approach will depend on your skin and what we're trying to achieve.

It's also important to understand that microneedling is not an instant transformation. Skin remodelling takes time, and treatment plans often involve a series of sessions rather than a single treatment.

What does an Exceed treatment feel like?

The experience varies from person to person, but you'll generally feel a sensation of vibration and tiny pricks as the device moves across the skin. Afterwards, it's normal for the skin to appear red and feel warm or sensitive for a period of time. Your practitioner will provide you with specific aftercare based on your treatment.

Sun protection is particularly important after microneedling because the skin can be more sensitive following the procedure. The TGA also notes that redness is common after microneedling and may last for several days.

Why we don't use just any microneedling pen

You can find microneedling devices at a huge range of price points, from professional medical devices through to products marketed for home use. But they're not all equivalent. The FDA distinguishes between microneedling products that simply work on the surface of the skin and medical microneedling devices that penetrate deeper into living skin tissue.

The TGA similarly recommends researching the device being used and notes that microneedling devices making higher-risk claims, such as treating acne scarring or penetrating the skin, need to meet Australian regulatory requirements.

For something that deliberately creates controlled injuries in the skin, we want to know exactly what we're working with. That's why choosing the right device, using sterile single-use cartridges and having appropriately trained practitioners is so important to us.

Is Exceed right for everyone?

No, and that's an important part of our approach.

Microneedling isn't automatically the right treatment for every skin type or concern. Your practitioner will consider your skin, medical history, current skincare, previous treatments, skin sensitivity and your goals before recommending it. Some people may benefit from microneedling, while others may be better suited to a different treatment or a period of skin preparation first.

We don't believe in choosing a treatment simply because it's trending.

We believe in choosing the treatment that makes sense for your skin.
