Teen Skin at TFS: Why Their Approach Looks Different

Acne can be a difficult thing to navigate at any age, but during the teenage years, it can feel especially overwhelming.

For many teenagers, changes in their skin happen at the same time as changes in hormones, confidence, routines, school, sport and social life. What might look like “just acne” from the outside can have a much bigger impact on how someone feels about themselves. At The Functional Skin Studio, we absolutely treat clients under 18, but our approach to teen skin is intentionally different from the way we approach adult skin.

Because teen skin isn't simply adult skin in a younger body.Teen skin needs a different conversation.

When a teenager comes into the studio with acne, our first priority isn't to throw a long list of active ingredients or aggressive treatments at their skin. We want to understand what is happening.

We look at things like:

  • When their acne started

  • Where it appears

  • Whether it's consistent or fluctuates

  • Their current skincare routine

  • How often they are cleansing

  • Whether they're picking or touching their skin

  • What products they're currently using

  • Their lifestyle and daily routine

  • How their skin feels, not just how it looks

  • And, importantly, how their skin is affecting their confidence

For a teenager, education is a huge part of treatment. Sometimes the biggest change we can make initially is helping them understand what their skin is doing and why. We don't believe in overwhelming teen skin.

One of the biggest differences you'll notice in a teen skin protocol is that we generally keep things simple, supportive and achievable.Teenagers don't necessarily need a 10 step routine. In fact, introducing too many products, too many actives or too many treatments can sometimes make things more confusing, and potentially compromise the skin barrier.

Instead, we're looking at the foundations. Cleanse. Hydrate. Protect. Treat appropriately. Stay consistent.

From there, we can build depending on how their skin responds. The goal isn't to give them the most complicated routine. It's to give them a routine they can actually understand and stick to.

So, what does a teen protocol look like?

Every client is different, but teen skin often starts with skin health and education before more intensive treatment. This might include a consultation where we assess their skin, talk through their current routine and identify where we can make simple changes.

Depending on the individual, we may then incorporate customised facial treatments, gentle exfoliation or other appropriate modalities as their skin allows. The treatment plan is always based on the condition of their skin rather than their age alone.

Some teenagers may have mild congestion and benefit from a very simple home care routine.

Others may have more persistent inflammatory acne that requires a more considered approach and potentially involvement from their GP, dermatologist or other appropriate healthcare professional.

We know when skin is within our scope, and when it needs more.

Why we don't treat teen acne exactly like adult acne Adult acne can have a very different set of contributing factors.

Hormonal changes, stress, medications, lifestyle, barrier dysfunction, environmental factors and previous skin damage can all play a role.

Teenage acne, meanwhile, commonly develops alongside the hormonal changes of puberty.

That doesn't mean every teenager's acne is hormonal, or that every adult's acne isn't, but it does mean we need to consider the stage of life the skin is in.

The skin needs to be assessed in context. And sometimes, the most important part is feeling understood. This is something particularly close to our team at TFS.

Both Paige and Annalise experienced their own acne struggles as teenagers. They remember what it feels like to look in the mirror and focus on the areas you wish you could change. They understand the frustration of trying different products, wondering why nothing seems to work and feeling like everyone else has “better skin.” That personal experience means they can meet our younger clients with genuine understanding and without judgement.

Because when a teenager comes into the studio, we don't want them to feel like their skin is something they should be embarrassed about.

We want them to feel safe, listened to and supported.Acne isn't something you simply have to “grow out of”. There's a common idea that teenagers just need to wait until they're older and their acne will disappear.

While acne can change as hormones settle, persistent or severe acne shouldn't simply be dismissed. Early education and appropriate care can help teenagers understand their skin, establish healthy habits and know when it's time to seek further support. And perhaps most importantly, we want to change the conversation around teen acne.

It's not about achieving flawless skin. It's about helping a young person feel comfortable in their skin while giving them the tools and support to care for it.

Teen skin deserves a different approach. At TFS, our goal isn't to treat teenagers like smaller versions of our adult clients.

We meet them where their skin is, consider the stage of life they're in and create a protocol that is simple, supportive and appropriate for them. Because healthy skin isn't about perfection. And no teenager should feel like they have to navigate acne alone.

If your teen is struggling with their skin, we'd love to help them understand what's happening and work out where to start.
