Skin Purge Or Skin Reaction

You’ve just started a new skincare product and suddenly your skin is breaking out, red, or irritated. Is it a good sign that the product is working  or is your skin telling you to stop? Knowing the difference could save you weeks of frustration and protect your skin barrier.

What is a Skin Purge?

A purge happens when active ingredients speed up skin cell turnover, pushing hidden congestion to the surface faster.

Common triggers:

  • Retinoids (retinol, retinaldehyde, prescription tretinoin)

  • Exfoliating acids (AHA, BHA, PHA)

  • High-strength Vitamin C

  • Enzyme exfoliants

Signs it’s a purge:

  • Breakouts in your usual problem areas

  • Small, similar pimples

  • Starts within 1–2 weeks of use

  • Clears within 4–6 weeks

What is a Skin Reaction?

A reaction is your skin saying “no thanks” to an ingredient usually due to allergy, irritation, or sensitivity.

Common triggers:

  • Fragrances (synthetic or essential oils)

  • Harsh cleansers or surfactants

  • Alcohol-heavy formulas

  • Overly strong actives

Signs it’s a reaction:

  • Red, itchy, inflamed patches

  • Burning or stinging that doesn’t settle

  • Breakouts in unusual areas

  • Persistent dryness or rash-like bumps

Not Sure Which One You Have?

Here’s what to do:

  1. Pause & observe - if it’s severe, stop using the product. If mild, space out applications and watch for changes.

  2. Support your barrier - replenish lipids and hydration with The Isobel Moisturiser.

  3. Get expert advice - book a consultation for tailored guidance.

Bottom line:

A purge can be part of your skin adjusting. A reaction means it’s time to change course. The key is listening to your skin and supporting it every step of the way.
