Retinol vs Retinal

Vitamin A is one of the most researched, results driven ingredient in modern skin care, but it also happens to be one of the most misunderstood. If you’ve ever wondered why there are so many vitamin A forms, strengths and names floating around (retinol, retinal, retinoic acid…), this post will break it down simply and clearly.

Today, we’re focusing on two commonly compared forms: retinol and retinal, and why at Functional Skin Studio, our vitamin A of choice is Osmosis retinal serums.

First: What Does Vitamin A Do For Skin?

Vitamin A encourages healthy skin cell turnover and supports optimal skin functioning, helping with:

  • dullness and texture

  • congestion

  • fine lines

  • uneven tone

  • overall skin rejuvenation

It’s like a communication tool, telling skin cells to behave more like younger, healthier versions of themselves.

Retinol vs Retinal - What’s the Actual Difference?

Retinol:

Retinol is a popular and well known form of Vitamin A found in many skincare products.
Before the skin can use it, retinol must convert twice:

Retinol → Retinal → Retinoic Acid (active form)

Because of this 2 step conversion:

  • It works, but more slowly

  • It can be more irritating for some

  • Higher % isn’t always better

Retinal (Retinaldehyde):

Retinal is the next step up the ladder.

It only has to convert once:
Retinal → Retinoic Acid

What that usually means:

  • faster visible improvements

  • less irritation

  • better tolerability for sensitive skins

  • more reliable cell communication

So while retinol and retinal are both vitamin A, the efficiency is different, and efficiency equals results with less inflammation.

Why We Choose Osmosis Retinals

There are many retinal serums on the market, but Osmosis retinals are formulated completely differently.

They are:

  • Gentle on the skin barrier

Osmosis doesn’t chase aggressive peeling; they support repair and rejuvenation without breaking down the barrier.

  • Delivered into the skin using liposomal technology

This increases absorption and lowers irritation, a major reason why so many of our clients can use it comfortably.

  • Progressive, not aggressive

Perfect for real skin conditions we see daily: redness, acne-prone skins, melasma tendencies, dehydration, and sensitivity.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding safe

Traditional retinoids and retinols are not used during pregnancy.
Osmosis retinals are formulated differently, making them a vitamin A option for pregnancy and breastfeeding clients, when used as directed.

Why Strength Isn’t Everything

A common misconception is that stronger equals better.
In reality, jumping to a high strength retinoid can:

  • compromise the barrier

  • cause peeling and redness

  • worsen pigmentation

  • inflame acne

The goal: consistent use, with the right form.
Retinal lets us achieve that.
